When people search today, they don't just look at Google anymore. They ask ChatGPT, read Gemini's summary and leave, or sometimes hand the whole task to an AI agent. This shift has a name: AIO. But the term alone is confusing enough — SEO now sits alongside AEO, GEO, and now Agentic SEO. In this post we cover what each one actually means, how they differ, and what to concretely do about it — including the steps we've taken ourselves.

What Is AIO?

AIO (AI Optimization) is the umbrella term for the work done to make your brand, content and digital presence easier for AI systems to understand, trust and cite as a source. Where classic SEO is built around clicks and rankings, AIO prioritizes clarity, authority and context — because the one generating the answer now is a machine, not a person.

In short: SEO gets you found, AIO gets you chosen by the machine generating the answer. Google AI Overview now synthesizes summaries from multiple sources and shows them above the blue links; ChatGPT Search and Perplexity pick sources as they build their own answers. Being visible in that selection process is now its own discipline.

SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO vs. AIO: What's the Difference?

These four terms get used interchangeably, but they actually represent different layers of visibility:

  • SEO — the base layer.Technical health, crawlability, classic Google rankings. The foundation the other three layers sit on.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — answerability.Building content around the questions people actually ask, with clear, quotable answers.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — citation in generative engines.Getting tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity to cite and summarize you; citations are earned through content structure.
  • AIO — trust and brand signal. The practice focused on appearing in Google's AI-generated summaries, built by accumulating off-site trust signals like reviews, citations and brand mentions.

In practice these aren't four separate jobs — SEO builds the technical foundation, AEO makes content answerable, GEO earns citations, and AIO ties it all together with trust signals. In the industry, "AIO" is increasingly becoming the umbrella term covering all four — and while "aio" as a search term still has no volume data in Turkish per SE Ranking, English-language sources already have a settled definition.

How Do You Actually Do AIO?

According to GEO visibility checklists, most of the variance in AI-engine visibility comes down to four factors:

  • Fact density. How much concrete, numeric, clearly stated information a page contains. Vague marketing language doesn't get quoted by AI.
  • Source authority.Third-party validation — backlinks, brand mentions, real user reviews. AI trusts external validation more than your own claims.
  • Structured data.Schema markup (FAQ, Organization, Breadcrumb) that AI can parse cleanly. Clarity translates directly into machine readability.
  • Recency. How up to date the content is. AI models prioritize fresh, evolving information.

On top of that, technical access matters: making sure AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot) aren't blocked, that AI-specific files like llms.txt follow the correct format, and that new content gets pushed to search engines via protocols like IndexNow.

What's Next: Agentic SEO

2026 added a new layer to the list: Agentic SEO. Every previous layer was about AI giving information; Agentic SEO is about AI taking action — booking a flight, scheduling an appointment, comparing B2B software and making a purchase decision on your behalf.

In Turkey this isn't an abstract future: the Gemini 3.1 Pro-powered agentic search experience went live via Google AI Mode and AI Overviews on February 18, 2026. Per SE Ranking data, "agentic seo" started from zero in October 2025 with 30 searches a month and reached 110/month by July 2026 — with a difficulty score of just 22, still a low-competition space. By comparison, "generative engine optimization" jumped from 40 to 4,400 over the same period, but its difficulty climbed to 77 — the early-entry window there is largely closed.

What Is Getflow Doing?

To keep this from being a purely theoretical post, here's where we actually stand. In recent weeks we built out AIO's technical foundation: we rewrote our llms.txt to the standard AI bots read correctly, we push new content to search engines instantly via IndexNow, and we filled the gaps in our Organization and person schemas (social profile links, for one).

To be honest: these steps aren't a guarantee of results, they're a prerequisite. Our baseline measured via Bing's AI Performance report is still zero citations — the technical foundation is there, but the authority/citation layer takes time. That's why we treat AIO not as a one-time "setup" but as an ongoing, measured process.

Bottom Line

AIO isn't a replacement for SEO, it's a layer built on top of it. Instead of getting caught up in the term soup (AEO, GEO, AIO, now Agentic SEO), the real question to focus on is: is your content clear, verifiable, and machine-readable? If you can answer yes to that, which term happens to be trending becomes secondary.
